SmartDoll Male Doll?

Towards the tail end of December Danny Choo put out an Instagram post regarding the male dolls.

Although our updated guy body sculpt is still in the pipeline, I want to address this issue sooner rather than later, so we're upgrading the classic guy body as an interim solution. This body will now feature the Evolve frame, which we've been rigorously testing (as seen with the cocoa guy in the photos). This upgrade offers enhanced posing, stability, and articulation. Our next task is to fine-tune the vinyl thickness for optimal frame compatibility.” -Danny Choo

Earlier in the month he also had included a WIP picture of another body type his team was working on.

It is interesting to see the different body types and styles Danny is looking to try. Although no date has been set for a release, nor a final prototype, the community is eagerly awaiting. Personally I am curious to see if he is going to go with the beefier body or the original slim? Or both? (please)

Get ready for a bumpy road

The community continues to expand and get bigger and bigger. This opens the doors for mainstream selling platforms like Amazon to enter the BJD arena. I have discussed some of the “BJD”s on Amazon in articles on my blog and videos on my YouTube.

These dolls are very new with little to no background information on them. Some dolls on Amazon have been called out for copying heads and body parts from other BJD dolls.

What makes matters even more difficult is that the licensing laws in China are very complex and not clear. It is a race to see who can claim ownership first for designs and the license can be given regardless of who actually made it. It is also a lengthy process that can take a while to get processed.

Hence, a lot of these “BJD”s on Amazon are up in the air when it comes to legality because no one truly knows who owns what or who gave out their design to who. Good luck trying to contact the companies to ask them first hand too.

YMY Dolls on Amazon

One of the doll companies that sells dolls on Amazon that got a legal dispute thrown at them is YMY. They are a popular doll company known for making poseable bodies that Nendroid collectors enjoy modifying.

Enter PiCCODO which is another popular doll company that makes smaller scale action dolls. The company recognized one of YMY’s bodies as their own design and filed a dispute. You can look through the tweets that went back and forth between the companies (check out this Reddit thread on it too).

Here is a bit of a translated message from YMY

YMY claims that all dolls they make are always originals and would never release a copy.

After time in court PiCCODO actually successfully won the dispute and got settlement as well. YMY no longer sells that body that was in question and instead sells a different one that is labeled as an “upgrade” body.

Nothing else has been said about YMYs other bodies and the court determined that the PiCCODO body was the only one that was successfully identified as copied.

PiCCODO’s Body that was copied

Will this make other doll companies that are readily available on Amazon rethink their products? Who knows? I will continue to urge the community to exercise caution when getting “BJD”s on Amazon since there are so many unknown factors.
